Nau mai ki
Te Akomanga 7

Tēnā koutou katoa e te whānau,

Welcome to a new school year! I am so excited to have your child in my class. This is my fourth year of teaching junior students, so I think you can infer that I love teaching this age group!

Firstly, I would like to welcome all the new additions to our Te Mahuri Whānau; Sean-Ivan, Ngareta, Mahina-Fou, Leigha, and Piripi. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to get to know you and your whānau, and I am looking forward to a happy and productive school year full of fun, learning, and adventures!

Secondly, I would like to welcome back; Tatai, Daena, Te Aroha, Turinui, Ngaputu, and Piki-Koroki. I am thrilled to be able to help you all progress further along on your learning journeys.

Term One
Aside from the core curriculum areas (Reading,  Writing, and Maths), this term we will focus on Papa Kainga. We will learn about the local hapū, Ngāti Tamaoho and their connections to Papakura. Students will be encouraged to learn about their own whakapapa/pepeha and about places that are significant to them and their whānau.

To kick off the sports calendar, Counties Manukau Sport will start in Week 2, teaching Room 7 kids skills like throwing and catching. These lessons will take place every fortnight.

This year, we are very fortunate to have Whaea Maddy, a trained swim instructor on staff. Each Wednesday, she will provide swimming lessons to Room 7 and Room 8. All lessons will be conducted in Te Reo Māori.
From Week 3, students will be allocated to a House (Rimu, Kauri, Totara, and Puriri). Every Friday, Te Mahuri students will be given the opportunity to learn Cooking, Mahi Toi, Putaiao/Hangarau and receive Te Reo tutelage from Matua Wiremu.

Digital Classroom
On February 16th, Room 7 will become a 1:1 digital classroom. Room 7 students will use Ipads to complete all the core curriculum activities. A class website and blog will be launched later this term. Please note that all Ipads will be funded by the school.

All Room 7 students will receive a homework book. Each week, I will assign a small amount of homework which will include a reading book, spelling words, and a worksheet.

All instructions will be written in Te Reo Māori and English to benefit parents when working with students at home.

The amount of homework being sent home is negotiable. I am aware that as parents, life can be hectic, and I am willing to reduce the amount of homework if needed. The main goal is to involve parents in the learning process. I only ask, that you praise your child often, and you let them showcase all the new things they have learnt.

Keeping open communication lines between whānau and staff is very important to us here at KPC. Please feel free to visit our classes or drop in to talk to the staff before and after school. We are happy to chat with parents, and address any concerns.

If your child is sick or will be absent, please ring the office on 0800 725 784 or email me at

Once again, welcome to Te Akomanga 7. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!

In Integrity, Confidence, and Excellence,
Whaea Evelyn
